Understanding Chronic Yeast Infection And How To Treat It

December 3rd, 2008 -- Posted in Yeast Infection | No Comments »

A chronic yeast infection can be an indication that the immune system is not working properly. People with chronic health conditions like diabetes and HIV are prone to chronic yeast infections.

In people with weakened immune systems, chronic yeast infections can affect various internal organs and cause pain or dysfunction of the organ. Approximately 85% of people with HIV contract a chronic yeast infection called esophagitis in their upper gastrointestinal system. This infection is similar to thrush but extends down the mouth and esophagus to the stomach. Candida esophagitis can cause painful ulcers throughout the GI system, making it difficult to swallow anything, even lukewarm liquids. If the infection spreads into the intestines, food may be poorly absorbed. People with this type of chronic yeast infection are in danger of becoming dehydrated.

If Candida yeast gets into the bloodstream, a person may become sick without fever. If the infection spreads to your brain, acute changes in mental function or behavior may occur.

When it comes to chronic yeast infections, self diagnosis may be a misdiagnosis. A handful of other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) the most common cause of vaginitis in the US, and trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection, cause similar symptoms. BV and trichiomoniasis may also be associated with serious reproductive health conditions that may lead to problems during pregnancy and after delivery. Visit www.yeastinfectiontreatment.org for more information on yeast infection.

A chronic yeast infection that includes a vaginal discharge that has an offensive odor with irritation is not normal and should be taken seriously. To diagnose your vaginal symptoms your health professional will perform a gynecological exam to check your vagina for inflammation and abnormal discharge. A sample of the vaginal discharge may be taken for laboratory examination under a microscope or for a yeast culture, a test to see if Candida fungi grow under laboratory conditions. Looking under a microscope also helps rule out other causes of discharge such as BV or trichomoniaisis, which require a different course of treatment than chronic yeast infections.

In general, it is acceptable to use OTC antifungal medication to self treat your symptoms if you’ve had a yeast infection diagnosed by your health care professional before and you are now experiencing exactly the same symptoms. However, if you meet any of the following criteria, do not self treat. Instead, contact a health professional for guidance:

· You’ve never had a yeast infection before
· You have fever and/or abdominal pain
· Your vaginal discharge is foul-smelling
· You are diabetic HIV positive, pregnant or nursing
· You used an over the counter yeast treatment but your symptoms have not gone away or they returned almost immediately.

If you take medication to treat a chronic yeast infection (whether it’s over the counter or prescription medication) be sure to use the full course of medication. Don’t stop using it, even if you feel better.

If you have chronic yeast infections you should make an appointment with your doctor for a complete physical examination. Chronic yeast infections may be caused by a serious underlying medical condition.

Vaginal Diseases

August 18th, 2008 -- Posted in Yeast Infection | No Comments »

Vaginal diseases can range from yeast infections to genital warts to cancer and back again. And these are all conditions that need to be taken seriously, even the lowly yeast infection. This is especially true if this particular vaginal disease is recurrent.

Recurrent yeast infections could be an indicator of something far more serious like HIV/ AIDS, just as recurrent genital warts can also be an indicator of something such as cervical cancer.

The first thing you need to do if you suspect that you might have one of the vaginal diseases is to consult with you physician and have a proper check up done. This can rule out other conditions and confirm for you whether or not you have something like a yeast infection.

Most vaginal diseases are contracted through sexual intercourse, and as such are considered to be sexually transmitted diseases.

And although yeast infections aren’t technically considered to be a sexually transmitted disease since the infection doesn’t spread through the exchange of bodily fluid, it can’t be denied that yeast infections can be transferred from one partner to the other through sexual intercourse.

It should also be noted that some vaginal diseases are merely a symptom of a greater underlying medical condition like those mentioned earlier, and are not necessarily the root cause. Only proper testing can determine this.

The treatment of vaginal diseases isn’t always easy and in some cases like genital warts it can be downright painful at times. There are however, things that can be done on your own to either help prevent vaginal diseases from occurring in the first, second or third place, or to help enhance whatever medications or remedies you might currently be taking.

If it’s the latter case and you’re already taking medication for your vaginal disease you might want to determine first of all whether anything else you take will react adversely with your present medication.

If however, you’re on the offensive against vaginal diseases and want to stop it from occurring or recurring, there are things that you can do.

The easiest of course, and the most difficult in many cases, is to change dietary habits. Obviously that’s easier said than done, but it can be done. You don’t need to do too much, maybe a few small changes at first to help you.

Dietary changes, you should note, in the case of vaginal diseases don’t refer to any of the latest fad diets, or starving yourself and living on a celery stalk for the entire day.

It means instead that you should switch to a healthier lifestyle if possible which eliminates as far as possible such things as refined foods, and fast foods. It should include leafy vegetables, fruits, and other good-for-you healthy foods.

Vaginal diseases don’t need to be a constant blot on your life, as along with the dietary changes a few simple lifestyle changes can also make a great difference.

Yeast Infection Signs

August 17th, 2008 -- Posted in Yeast Infection | No Comments »

If you suffer from yeast infection there’s a good chance that you might not be aware of it, or that you might mistake it for something else entirely. There are yeast infection signs which can tell you whether or not you have a yeast infection, but sometimes these signs are the same as some other infections.

That’s where if you think you might have all or some yeast infection signs you might want to consult with your doctor first of all. This serves a dual purpose, in that first of all it can be determined whether or not you have a yeast infection, and secondly it will help to get the proper medication for you.

If you think you have all the yeast infection signs, and decide to take care of the problem yourself, that’s all well and good because there are over the counter medications like Monistat available which can help you.

But if you’re treating a yeast infection and you have some other condition, you will be making your body used to, and in turn immune to, the yeast infection medication. What this means is that when you really need the medication, it won’t work for you.

This is a very good reason to take yourself off to a doctor as the first yeast infection signs that appear. In brief yeast infection signs include rash, itching, burning sensation, vaginal discharge¸ pain during sexual intercourse, redness and soreness of the irritated area, and a swelling of the vulva.

The most unbearable aspect of all the yeast infection signs is that of the itching. For the most part it can be unbearable and interfere with your daily life. The best thing for this is to use as far as possible remedy that will give you instant itch relief.

For this you can employ something like Aloe Vera juice, just daub a little on the affected areas with your fingertips or a cotton pad.

Other discomfiting yeast infection signs includes the burning sensation you might feel when urinating, and thee pain that you might have during sexual intercourse. These can both be troublesome yeast infection signs, and should be looked at immediately as they could herald other medical conditions.

Vaginal discharge is another of the yeast infection signs that can cause some problems although not all the time. Depending on the texture and the odor of the discharge you might have to take steps to help yourself.

For instance sometimes the vaginal discharge can be quite odorless and a thin milky-like substance. At other times yeast infection signs of vaginal discharge can be quite offensive and have a strong and pungent odor, at times yeasty, and at times sulphuric in nature, while the consistency can be cottage cheese-like.

Yeast infection signs should be taken seriously and looked at, especially if you get recurring yeast infection signs. This can indicate that the yeast infection signs are more of a symptom of something else rather than being the cause itself.

Vaginal Discharge

One of the most common signs and symptoms for sufferers of yeast infections is vaginal discharge. This need not be the case of course, but most times you will find that you will have some vaginal discharge with yeast infections.

This vaginal discharge can range from foul smelling and unpleasant to odorless and barely noticeable. There are a few different ways of dealing with vaginal discharge and homeopathic remedies are one of them.

Before going any further down that path however, you might first want to know what the discharge will be like. As was mentioned earlier it can be foul smelling, or it can be odorless, with a texture resembling either a thick white cottage cheese-like consistency or a thin, milky egg white consistency.

Some women also have a yellowish discharge which is firm and especially acrid or pungent, while sometimes the discharge can have a watery consistency.

All of these types vaginal discharge can lead to irritation, itching and/ or burning of the vagina. According to homeopathic treatments these types of vaginal discharge can also have an emotional impact on a woman, and it’s along with this that homeopathy tries to cure the vaginal discharge caused by the yeast infection.

There are of course other methods if you aren’t fully comfortable with using homeopathy to cure yeast infections and vaginal discharge problems.

One thing that you can do though if you suffer from vaginal discharge is to change your diet to reflect the fact that you have a yeast infection.

To this end staying away from yeast containing foods such as breads, fermented food products and alcohols, foods rich in sugars and carbohydrates, and also refined foods, and red meats should go a long way to helping you curb any vaginal discharge.

Mushrooms are also something that you might want to avoid. But things like brown rice and millet, citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges, lemons and limes should be included in your diet.

As should unsweetened yogurt, curd, cranberries, garlic, onions, vinegar, cinnamon, oregano, and also vegetables, vegetable broths and chicken. And something that most people absolutely forgets to include in their diets whether they have yeast infections or not, is water.

Drinking your allotted amount of water – eight glasses or more – a day, can do wonders for your body. It’s not only a great thirst quencher but it also clears away unwanted toxins from your body, and it can give you a refreshing feeling just when your spirits need it the most.

It can also help to de-stress you, stress can also lead to yeast infections which leads to vaginal discharge. All in all, along with any remedies you’re taking for your yeast infection, if you can just change your lifestyle to a healthier one, your yeast infection troubles in the form of itching, burning and vaginal discharge can be a thing of the past.
